The VA estimates that on any given night there are 107000 veterans
living on the streets and over the course of a year, approximately
twice that many experience homelessness. Only eight percent of the
general population can claim veteran status, but nearly one-fifth of
the homeless population are veterans.* A Veteran's Voice tells the
story of homeless veterans whose battles continued long after their
service time was up. Filmed in Rochester, NY over an eight-month
period, Chris Lavelle (a former Sergeant in the United States Army)
was able to gain the trust of these men who served in conflicts from
Vietnam to our current wars. The film also takes a look into the
similarities and differences veterans from different eras experience.
One of these differences is the time that veterans take to receive
help. It is said that veterans from Vietnam and earlier wars would
wait 15 to 20 years before excepting help and that veterans from
today are getting help within a few years of their discharge.*** The
most effective programs for homeless and at-risk veterans are
community-based, nonprofit, "veterans helping veterans" groups.
Programs that seem to work best feature transitional housing with the
camaraderie of living in structured, substance-free environments with
fellow veterans who are succeeding at bettering themselves.* The
